Dr. David J. Hergan is an orthopedic surgeon who is fellowship-trained in orthopedic sports medicine and joint reconstruction.  He specializes in the latest arthroscopic and minimally invasive procedures for the shoulder, hip, and knee. He has a special interest in hip preservation and is a national instructor of hip arthroscopy for the treatment of hip impingement and labral tears. Dr. Hergan is also a specialist in the minimally invasive direct anterior technique for hip replacements. In the shoulder, he has performed thousands of rotator cuff repairs and is published in orthopedic scientific literature on repair techniques. Dr. Hergan regularly performs shoulder replacements using the newest and most advanced approaches in order to serve active patients who wish to return to a high level of function. In the knee, he specializes in cartilage transplantation, ACL reconstruction and various treatment techniques for meniscus tears. He is also certified in robotic-assisted partial and total knee replacements.  Dr. Hergan completed his undergraduate degree at Colgate University, and subsequently graduated with a medical degree and Master of Science in Physiology from Chicago Medical School. He then completed his residency in orthopedics at the Medical College of Wisconsin and sports medicine arthroscopy and reconstruction fellowship at New York University/Hospital for Joint Diseases. Dr. Hergan has held multiple leadership roles throughout his career including Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Middlesex Hospital since 2019. He is currently the Director of The Middlesex Hospital Joint Replacement Program and Director of Quality Improvement for Orthopedics at Middlesex Hospital. He is also the Chairman of The Clinical Governance Board and Chief Medical Officer for Middlesex Orthopedic & Spine Associates.
